At just sixteen, Maria envisioned herself on the world stage, advocating for her community’s needs and shaping transformative policies that could change lives. A bright and ambitious girl from a small, close-knit town, she firmly believed in the power of leadership, justice and the impact of politics. As she advanced through school, Maria dedicated herself to her studies and extracurricular activities, determined to build a successful career in public service. However, as she took her first steps into politics, her dreams began to fade, overshadowed by a harsh reality of hostility and violence.

The challenges Maria faced were severe and relentless. Online threats to her safety, sexist remarks that belittled her capabilities and targeted intimidation campaigns became distressingly routine. Despite her undeniable talent and fervent passion for public service, she found herself retreating from the spotlight, increasingly silenced by a pervasive climate of fear and harassment. Her story mirrors that of countless women globally who confront similar threats, from physical violence and verbal abuse to systemic discrimination, all of which jeopardize not only their political careers but also their fundamental safety and dignity.

This sobering reality highlights a critical truth: violence against women in politics is a significant barrier to achieving gender equality, robust democracy and societal progress. Rooted in entrenched gender stereotypes and power imbalances, this violence aims to silence women’s voices and diminish their influence in decision-making processes. These acts of aggression whether physical, psychological, or digital are designed to intimidate, undermine and exclude women from positions of power and leadership.

More so when women are systematically targeted in these ways, their participation in politics is drastically stifled and their leadership potential remains tragically unrealized. This deprives societies of diverse perspectives and innovative ideas, perpetuating a cycle of inequality that hinders social progress. Countries with high levels of violence against women in politics often experience weaker governance, less inclusive policymaking and stunted social development.

However, addressing this urgent crisis requires a multifaceted approach. Legal frameworks must be strengthened to provide robust protections for women in politics, holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Moreover, societal attitudes must shift challenging harmful stereotypes and promoting a culture of respect and support for women’s leadership. Civil society organizations, international bodies, political parties and citizens must collaborate in solidarity to create safe environments where women can lead without fear.

Every woman who steps into the complex world of politics is a beacon of hope and change, embodying courage that challenges oppressive norms and inspires future generations. Building global solidarity among women and their allies is crucial, sending a strong message that violence and intimidation have no place in the pursuit of justice, equality and democracy.

To all women in politics: Your resilience and bravery are the backbone of social progress. Your voices are vital, and your presence at the decision-making table is indispensable. Stand tall, confident that you are part of a global movement dedicated to ending violence and protecting your leadership. You are not alone in this struggle. Together, we can create a future where every woman’s voice is heard, respected and celebrated free from fear and violence.

Let us unite in this essential fight, when women are empowered and safeguarded, societies flourish. Ending violence against women in politics is not just aspirational it is a moral imperative that paves the way for a more just, inclusive and equitable global community.
