In a world where accessibility and inclusion are still a work in progress, there is need to amplify the voices and achievements of individuals with disabilities. This IDPWD, we honor the unbreakable spirit of those living with muscular dystrophy, who inspire us to build a more inclusive tomorrow.

As a person with a muscular dystrophy diagnosis, my main concern is regarding accessibility of our built environment. Accessibility isn’t simply about ramps and narrow doorways; it’s a multifaceted issue encompassing physical, digital, attitudinal, and systemic barriers. Physically, many public spaces remain inaccessible to wheelchair users, individuals with visual or auditory impairments, and those with mobility challenges. In addition, digital accessibility is also equally vital in today’s world, yet many websites, apps, and online services fail to meet the needs of users with disabilities, leaving them excluded from essential information, services, and online communities.

This year, let’s commit to building a world where accessibility isn’t an exception but the norm. Let’s commit to be the change we what to see in the world; a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can fully participate in society, contributing their talents and achieving their full potential. Let’s celebrate the accomplishments of individuals with muscular dystrophy and all persons with disabilities and recommit to dismantling the barriers that stand in the way of true inclusion. Let’s strive to truly leave no one behind. I thank you.
