Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue that affects us all, with women and girl children being disproportionately affected. While it’s important to acknowledge that men can also be victims of GBV, the majority of cases involve women and girls whose rights are violated. Some of the underlying causes of GBV include;
– Infertility
– Troubled background
– Financial struggles and income shortages
– Harmful beliefs and cultural practices
– Societal pressure
The effects of GBV are far-reaching and devastating, leading to:
– Divorce and family breakdown
– Low self-esteem and mental health issues
– Physical harm and even death
To combat GBV, there is need to:
– Raise awareness through campaigns and education
– Provide counseling sessions and support services for survivors
– Offer safe houses and shelters for those fleeing abusive situations
